Ryan Meili stepping down as MLA after resigning as Saskatchewan NDP leader

Saskatchewan NDP Leader Ryan Meili says he is resigning as the member of the legislature for Saskatoon Meewasin.

He says his last day will be July 1.

Meili's resignation comes after he announced in February that he was stepping down as the Opposition party’s leader.

He has said he would stay on until a new leader is chosen and the NDP leadership vote is scheduled for next month in Regina.

The two candidates so far are Regina Lakeview MLA Carla Beck and Saskatoon lawyer Kaitlyn Harvey.

Meili won the Saskatoon Meewasin seat in a 2017 byelection and was selected as party leader in 2018.

Meili, who is a physician, said he isn’t sure yet what he will do next.

“I’m going to take some time off, take a couple of trips and think through next steps,” he said Thursday.

“It will be medicine and some degree of advocacy for health because I don’t know how to do anything else.”
