Yukon child-care program will give families $700 per child in licensed care
Yukon has released details of a $25-million early learning and universal child-care program.
The territory says in a news release that starting April 1, families will save up to $700 a month per child if they are registered in a licensed full-time child-care program.
Families with children in part-time care will receive a pro-rated fee reduction.
The government says care centres that choose to take part in the program will also get enhanced funding for operations and wages for early childhood educators.
Pauline Frost, the minister of health and social services, says the universal program will put more disposable income into the hands of families and create more choices for those who want to work outside the home.
Premier Sandy Silver announced Yukon would be moving to an affordable child-care system last July after the government studied the issue in 2018 and 2019.
