New Westminster election night result

VANCOUVER โ€” New Westminster election results as of Oct. 24, 2020 at 11:20 p.m.:

Jennifer Whiteside of the NDP has been elected as the new MLA in New Westminster, keeping the seat for the party. Whiteside won 6,723 out of 11,799 counted votes (56.98 per cent) with 93 of 101 polls reporting.

Cyrus Sy of the Green party won 2,411 votes (20.43 per cent). Lorraine Brett of the BC Liberal Party won 1,988 votes (16.85 per cent). Benny Ogden of the Conservative party won 517 votes (4.38 per cent). Donald Wilson of the Libertarian party won 160 votes (1.36 per cent). 

As of 11:20 p.m., The Canadian Press is projecting the BC NDP has won a majority government. The party has won or is leading in 55 of 87 seats. The BC Liberal Party has won or is leading in 29, and the BC Green Party has won or is leading in three seats.

As of Oct. 23, 12,263 vote-by-mail packages had been issued to registered voters in the riding. There are a total of 42,500 registered voters in New Westminster.

Provincewide, 724,279 mail-in ballots have been sent out, and there are 3,485,858 registered voters.

Mail-in ballots will be counted by hand, starting in 13 days.
