Vancouver-Hastings election riding preview

VANCOUVER — It was a landslide victory in the last election in Vancouver-Hastings when Shane Simpson of the NDP took 59.98 per cent of the vote, defeating Jane Spitz of the BC Liberal Party by a margin of 38.49 percentage points.
Simpson, who served as the minister of social development and poverty reduction, isn't seeking re-election this year. Spitz is not running again either.
The BC Liberal Party is running Alex Read as its candidate, Bridget Burns is the candidate for the Green party and Niki Sharma is running for the NDP.
Also in the race are Golok Z Buday for the Libertarian party and Kimball Cariou for the Communist Party of BC.
The Vancouver-Hastings riding is located in Vancouver.
There are 42,916 registered voters in the riding, compared to 40,555 in the last election.
As of Oct. 20, 10,360 vote-by-mail packages had been issued to registered voters.
The previous voter turnout rate in the riding was 59.59 per cent, compared to 61.18 per cent provincewide.
At dissolution, the NDP held 41 seats, the BC Liberal Party had 41 seats and the Green party two seats. Two seats were held by Independents and one seat was vacant.
