New Westminster election riding preview
VANCOUVER — It was a landslide victory in the last election in New Westminster when Judy Darcy of the NDP took 51.93 per cent of the vote, defeating Jonina Campbell of the Green party by a margin of 26.86 percentage points.
Darcy, who served as the minister of mental health and addictions, isn't seeking re-election this year. Campbell is not running again either.
The Conservative party is running Benny Ogden as its candidate, The Green party is running Cyrus Sy as its candidate, Jennifer Whiteside is the candidate for the NDP and Lorraine Brett is running for the BC Liberal Party.
Also in the race is Donald Wilson for the Libertarian party.
The New Westminster riding is located in Metro Vancouver.
There are 46,822 registered voters in the riding, compared to 43,690 in the last election.
As of Oct. 20, 12,263 vote-by-mail packages had been issued to registered voters.
The previous voter turnout rate in the riding was 63.61 per cent, compared to 61.18 per cent provincewide.
At dissolution, the NDP held 41 seats, the BC Liberal Party had 41 seats and the Green party two seats. Two seats were held by Independents and one seat was vacant.
