Kootenay West election riding preview
VANCOUVER — It was a landslide victory in the last election in Kootenay West when Katrine Conroy of the NDP took 59.64 per cent of the vote, defeating Jim Postnikoff of the BC Liberal Party by a margin of 35.27 percentage points.
Conroy, who served as the Minister of Children and Family Development, is up for re-election this year. Postnikoff, however, is not running again.
The Green party is running Andrew Duncan as its candidate, Corbin Kelley is the candidate for the BC Liberal Party and Glen Byle is running for the Conservative party.
Ed Varney and Fletcher Quince are running as Independents.
The Kootenay West riding includes the communities of Rossland, Trail - Fruitvale, Castlegar and Nakusp.
There are 33,192 registered voters in the riding, compared to 31,318 in the last election.
As of Oct. 20, 4,111 vote-by-mail packages had been issued to registered voters.
The previous voter turnout rate in the riding was 60.78 per cent, compared to 61.18 per cent provincewide.
At dissolution, the NDP held 41 seats, the BC Liberal Party had 41 seats and the Green party two seats. Two seats were held by Independents and one seat was vacant.
