Abbotsford South election riding preview

VANCOUVER โ€” It was a landslide victory in the last election in Abbotsford South when Darryl Plecas won the riding for the BC Liberal Party, taking 52.48 per cent of the vote and defeating Jasleen Arora of the NDP by a margin of 24.19 percentage points.

Plecas, who sat as an Independent and served as the Speaker of the legislature, is not running again. Neither is Arora.

The Green party is running Aird Flavelle as its candidate, Bruce Banman is the candidate for the BC Liberal Party and Inder Johal is running for the NDP.

Also in the race is Laura-Lynn Thompson for the Christian Heritage Party of BC.

The Abbotsford South riding includes the communities of Aldergrove, Vancouver, Abbotsford and Aldergrove East.

There are 44,896 registered voters in the riding, compared to 41,002 in the last election.

As of Oct. 20, 7,425 vote-by-mail packages had been issued to registered voters.

The previous voter turnout rate in the riding was 54.71 per cent, compared to 61.18 per cent provincewide.

At dissolution, the NDP held 41 seats, the BC Liberal Party had 41 seats and the Green party two seats. Two seats were held by Independents and one seat was vacant.
