Learn to dance Salsa and Bachata free this summer

Vancouver, put on your dancing shoes and get ready to learn some moves this summer! Rueda de la Vida, the dance community behind the long-running Sunday classes on West 6th, is running free salsa and bachata sessions all season, both outdoors on Friday nights and indoors every Sunday.

You do not need a partner, any experience, or fancy shoes. You just need to show up.

Friday nights: Salsa at the Park

The headline event is Salsa at the Park, a free outdoor dance night in Mount Pleasant. It runs every Friday from June 5 through August 28 at Sun Hop Park, 3333 Main Street.

Each night opens with a free beginner lesson at 7 p.m., so people who have never danced before can pick up the basics before the floor fills. Social dancing follows from 7:30 to 9 p.m. It is open to all levels, and singles are welcome. No partner is required.

The format is simple: an hour and a half of dancing under the open sky, with the music, the park, and whoever turns up to dance.

Sunday classes on West 6th

For anyone who wants to keep building, Rueda de la Vida runs a full slate of Sunday classes at 76 West 6th Avenue. The beginner classes are free, every week.

From 5 to 6 p.m. the studio runs Salsa Beginner (free), Salsa Improver, and Bachata Intermediate. From 6 to 7 p.m. it switches to Bachata Beginner (free), Bachata Improver, and Salsa Intermediate. Social dancing then runs from 7 to 9 p.m., open to everyone who took a class or just wants to practise.

That means a complete beginner can take a free salsa lesson at 5, a free bachata lesson at 6, and stay to dance socially until 9, without paying anything. Beginner classes are always free; the link to register is on the group’s website.

Why bother

Partner dancing is one of the cheaper ways to get a regular workout, meet people offline, and learn a skill you can carry into any social setting. Salsa and bachata are also some of the most forgiving styles to start with, since the basic steps are easy to learn and the social scene in Vancouver is welcoming to newcomers.

With the beginner lessons free both at the park and in the studio, the only real cost this summer is the time it takes to show up.

Salsa at the Park runs Fridays, June 5 to August 28, at Sun Hop Park, 3333 Main Street. Sunday classes are at 76 West 6th Avenue. Details and registration for free beginner classes are at ruedadance.org.
