Yukon premier says little will change in COVID-19 prep after top doctor takes leave

WHITEHORSE — Yukon's premier says he's confident the territory's management of the COVID-19 pandemic will continue smoothly after its top doctor took a leave of absence to run for the federal Liberal party.

Premier Sandy Silver says chief medical officer of health Dr. Brendan Hanley has been supported by "amazing" staff, who will continue managing the territory's COVID-19 response.

Silver says Dr. Catherine Elliott, the deputy chief medical officer, will assume some of the public-facing duties previously done by Hanley.

He says the group of medical professionals will continue working to keep Yukon residents safe.

Silver also announced two new cases of COVID-19, with 45 current active cases.

He says more than 80 per cent of eligible Yukon residents are now fully vaccinated.
