FREDERICTON — Health officials in New Brunswick are reporting 16 new cases of COVID-19 in the province today and another death related to the virus.
The death of a person in their 80s at the Manoir Belle Vue in Edmundston is the 17th in the province since the pandemic began.
Chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell says some areas of the province that expected to see restrictions eased will remain as they are for a few more weeks because of concerns that new variants of the novel coronavirus could launch a third wave of cases.
None of the new, more contagious, variants has been detected in New Brunswick yet, but Russell says they would arrive at least a week before they're detected.
There are now 313 active cases in the province, and four people are in hospital, including two in intensive care.
There have been 1,218 cases in the province since the pandemic began.
