Nova Scotia offers $10 million in disaster funding for victims of November rainstorm

Homeowners and businesses in Nova Scotia that faced uninsurable damage following a heavy rainstorm in late November can apply for financial assistance starting today.

The funding will cover up to $200,000 in damage for affected municipalities, small businesses and nonprofits, with no required deductible.

Municipal Affairs Minister John Lohr says the funding is expected to total more than $10 million and cover items such as damaged household appliances and home goods. Lohr says the federal government is expected to reimburse the province about $3.5 million.

He says the Canadian Red Cross will distribute additional emergency funding on behalf of the province to households who need immediate assistance.

Health Minister Michelle Thompson says households eligible for immediate help include 41 homes in the Indian Gardens trailer court in Antigonish, N.S., and 11 households in Pictou County.

A slow-moving storm that started on Nov. 22 lashed the Maritimes with wind gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour and dropped hundreds of millimetres of rain on the region over several days.
