Million Brits petition to ban Trump

A petition calling for the US President to be prevented from making a state visit to the United Kingdom has reached a million signatures in just a few hours.

“Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen,” the petition started by Graham Guest of Leeds reads. “Donald Trump’s well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit.”

The UK government must responds to all petitions that receive more than 10,000 signatures, and must consider them for debate in Parliament once they cross the 100,000 signature threshold.

“Donald Trump should not be welcomed to Britain while he abuses our shared values with his shameful Muslim ban and attacks on refugees’ and women’s rights,” Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn said in support of the petition. “Theresa May would be failing the British people if she does not postpone the state visit and condemn Trump’s actions in the clearest terms. That’s what Britain expects and deserves.”

Meanwhile columnist and political activist Owen Jones has organized an emergency demonstration against Trump’s Muslim ban to take place on Monday in front of 10 Downing Street, the British Prime Minister’s official residence.

“Donald Trump has imposed a ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US,” Jones wrote in the event invitation on Facebook. “That includes people who helped the US army. That includes people on holiday trying to get home via the United States. That includes people trying to be reunited with their dying parents.”

“There are moments of terrible injustice throughout history where we look back and rightly ask – what did people do?,” Jones added. “Future generations will look back at the targeting of Muslims – as we look back at the targeting of Jews – with disgust, horror and shame. If we do not speak out, we are complicit.”
